Friday 27th June Silk Screen Monoprinting at Rural Arts, Thirsk Book here

This year my trip abroad takes me to Northern Holland where I shall be exhibiting and running a range of workshops [some 2 days, 3 days and a couple of single day events - suitable for every level of ability] http://www.hawar.nl

12/13 July: Drawing for Textiles workshop: experimental drawing techniques and mark making translated onto cloth using stitch & embellishment/needle punching.  I often hear the words ‘I can’t draw’ – but are you drawing in a way that will help & support your tactile work?  This workshop will ‘free up’ your drawing style; help you kick start a new project or inject some much needed energy into your practise.  It will show you how to translate your drawn marks into stitch and cloth. Don’t panic over the ‘D’ word!  Drawing is not a dirty word & you don’t need to feel like you can draw to take part – my aim to to alter your perception of what a drawing can be and to show you how useful ways to draw that will help your tactile creations.
15 – 17 July Textured Landscapes: developing images from initial drawings, idea development, dyeing cloth and expressive machine stitch.
Weather permitting we shall collect and record information ‘en plein air’ and look at a series of design/explorative ideas to help develop you expand your ideas.  Learning to paint and draw with dyes we will push designs in to cloth then work into them with free and expressive stitch.  Create a main piece or a series of smaller works inspired by the local surroundings.
19th July [one day workshop] Developing Sketchbooks
By the end of the workshop you’ll have a full & jam packed book full of ideas and techniques which you can refer back to again and again.
Explore a series of easy and exciting practical exercises which you can add to any design project – they’ll help you develop imagery and are key elements to any sketchbook.
  1. Lose the fear: starting a new book is full of woes, let me show you how!
  2. The essential ingredients.
  3. No panic drawing/observation
  4. Found and abstracted
  5. Cut and enhance
  6. Repeat and play
  7. Review
20th July [one day workshop] Structural Stitches: the over looked straight stitch!
Everyone wants to run before they can walk, but hang on! There’s so much you can create with the humble straight stitch – this workshop illustrates the tremendously diverse textures and structures that can be develop by just using a straight stitch: we’ll look at ‘the bias’, create ‘faux chenille’, pin tuck and pleat, make waves and have a throughly enjoyable day!  You’ll leave with bundles of samples and a head full of techniques to apply to other projects.

‘Good clear teaching – approachable tutor who anticipated what is complex/confusing.’
‘Nice friendly atmosphere.’
‘The studio is really well laid out, very friendly atmosphere.’
‘Thoroughly informative. Excellent studio – much more spacious than I would have expected. Well equipped.’
