A fabulous new workshop based on my uber popular Developing Sketchbooks online workshop….this is the studio version with a strong positive bias towards cloth and stitch exploration.

Each student will have a sewing machines and embellisher to work with, provided by Janome – I’ll provide the inspiration and all the fabrics you need: turn up, learn and enjoy!!

You will make a fabric book full of stitch and needle punch exercises and techniques.

As with the ‘original’ Developing Sketchbook workshop I’ll help you get over your fear of the blank page [plain fabric].  We’ll look at ways to gather research, to observe and develop/play with imagery & cloth – its a 2 day jam packed extravaganza of fabric and thread exploration

Reviews

  • A fabulous workshop, well structured but very fluid if that makes sense! Materials and equipment were plenty. Well recommended especially if you don’t know where to start with design – Dionne’s method of ‘pimping the fabric’ is a great way to break any tension, either in the fabric or artist. Dionne’s culinary skills were also excellent! Thanks for a great couple of days.

  • Fabulous well structured and fun workshop, opening opportunities to develop work by concentrating on the processes used and the importance and methods of reviewing regularly. Clear guidance in a very supportive manner, but expect to be encouraged to take a jump in unexpected directions. Highly recomended, especiallly for those wanting hands on learning or who prefer to work outside their normal environment rather than follow an online course (although the online version of this course is also excellent).

  • Such a fabulous workshop investigating and creating our own ‘sketchbooks for textile artists’. Dionne’s style really encourages and promotes your own free-thinking, spontaneous creativity (even for ditherers like me) and subsequent analysis, selection and refinement of your work. I have much to think about and process from these two days, way beyond any expectations I had of the course. I can’t recommend it too highly

  • This week I had the opportunity to attend a new workshop “Fabric Sketchbooks” ran by fellow creative Dionne Swift. This two day course offered me the chance to explore techniques that were dynamic and spontaneous creating inhibited and exciting mark-making directly onto cloth. The methods were simple yet effective and the teaching structured and informative enabling me to relinquish control and inject a little freedom and movement into my work. A valuable two days spent with a knowledgeable and talented instructor.

  • Fabric Sketchbooks for me was an excellent two-day session that allowed me to think outside the ‘box’ and turn it inside out, too! Numerous techniques explored and working with a ‘timer’ really showed me what a lot can be produced in the space of 5 or 10 minutes…so if you’re time poor there is still plenty you can achieve in textiles – no excuses!!! I came away with some very interesting ideas to work on in future pieces and I began to appreciate both sides of my stitched or embellished piece – so there isn’t a front or back, just cloth to be worked. Fantastic facilities at Janome as always and the odd piece of cake to help the day along. Highly recommended!

  • Thanks Nicola…hoping you meant un-inhibited?! Xxx

  • I have had the most fabulous two days this week on this workshop. it was full on in a great way and it gave me great confidence in using my sewing machine for FME. It was also so much fun, lots of laughter, lovely fellow students and a superb tutor. I can’t recommend this course enough

  • I attended Dionne’s NEW course with full knowledge and experience that I will be brought up to speed and technically taught new skills for drawing on a sewing machine. I had done the paper sketchbook online last Sptember and so when Dionne talked about the limitations of using conventional sketchbooks, I knew that I was in the right place with cake to die for. I looked forward to this course after the sad loss of my father a few weeks before and travelled up from Oxford. Within 2 days I was flying. The speed returned thanks to the athletic approach to sewing and the artistic mentoring. Really superb leaving me with loads to go at. Of course now an embellisher machine is on my birthday list for July.
